Josh Wardle, a Welsh software engineer, is the creator and developer of Wordle, an online word game. Players can guess a five-letter word six times, and each guess receives wordle help in the shape of colored tiles that show when the letters match or are in the right place. In Wordle, players attempt to guess the same word, with just one daily solution. In 2023, Wordle was played 4.8 billion times.
Wordle was made by Wardle for him and his companion to enjoy, then in October 2021 it was released to the public. The concepts are similar to those of the 1955 pen and paper game Jotto and the television game show series Lingo.
The game experienced a surge in popularity in December 2021 after Wardle gave players the opportunity to copy their daily results as emoji squares, which were widely shared on Twitter.
The game has also been made into numerous clones, variants, and versions in languages other than English. Wordle relocated to the newspaper’s Games section in February after being acquired by The New York Times Company in January 2022 for an undisclosed seven-figure fee.
