According to several foreign news outlets, Samsung has not given up on the compact version of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, internally called Q6a. Recent rumors indicated that the phone’s development had been suspended, but the release of test firmware indicated otherwise.
Reports indicate that Q6a would have been a stretch order. The company’s CEO, TM Roh, ordered Samsung engineers to create a phone weighing below 239 grams and 7.7 mm thick when folded, according to The Korea Economic Daily.
For comparison, that is more svelte than the 8.6mm Galaxy S24 Ultra and the 12.1mm Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Possible design changes
By way of contrast, the Z Fold 6 has a 7.6-inch display. It may be that Samsung needs to shave off even more of those extra three tenths of an inch if it’s going to have any hope of hitting its ultra-thin smartphone. The company has already shown that it can make folding electronics a lot thinner—for instance, the 7.3-inch main screen of the original Galaxy Fold folds up to 17.1 mm.
On the other hand, while the exact measurements of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim—or Z Fold 6 Ultra, as some have called it—are not known, yet another leak from early July suggests that its inner display will be a full eight inches diagonally.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Availability
It’s not immediately clear how widely the Z Fold 6 Slim will be available because there are different reports suggesting both possibilities.
According to the German tech news site Allround-PC, Q6a will have its limited launch in China and South Korea in October. Contrary to that, GalaxyClub says that the date is early 2025. Instead, by the end of the year, Samsung will unveil a 10mm Galaxy Z Fold Slim model,” sources close to the Korea Economic Daily said. Therefore, it isn’t quite 7.7mm, even though it looks like future devices will get smaller over time.
